McGovern & Haas Know How to Shuffle

Nearly 2,000 people lined up in West Newton, MA yesterday for the Paddy’s Pub Shillelagh Shuffle 3 Mile. The race was the final event in the 2014 NE Runner Pub Series. The fastest Shufflers out there were Joe McGovern and Kara Haas.

Joe ran impressively fast, breaking the minute mark on his way to the win. TJ Unger ran a pretty quick time himself (15:11), but it was no match for Joe’s 14:58. The top masters runner was Greg Picklesimer who ran a 15:41 and finished 3rd overall.

Another win for the ageless Haas.

For the ladies, it was another overall victory for masters runner Kara Haas. It’s just not fair to the younger open runners that they still have to face her as she continues to rack up the wins. Kara ran a 17:12 that placed her 26th overall and in some good company. Just ahead of her was 2014 Mountain Goat Erik Vandendries (16:54) and right behind her was a couple of dominate senior runners in Paul “Goose” Hammond (17:29) and Jimmy “No I’m Not That Guy On TV” Fallon (17:40). Kara’s nearest competition was Candice Gagnon who ran a 17:57 and finished in 33rd place.

70 year old Holmquist taught a few lessons to many younger runners that day.

Also of note on the day was the performance by 70 year old Jan Holmquist. The Burlington, MA resident ran a 21:08 and finished in 133rd place (out of 1,911 finishers). That age grades out to somewhere near 5,000%.

Pub Series standings haven’t been released as of yet but will most likely show up in the next issue of NE Runner.
