10K and Beyond: One Runner’s Story tells the story of how I became a runner at the age of 40. I had tried here and there along the way to pick up running, but it never did anything for me. It seemed boring, it hurt, I just wasn’t that interested. That is until 2009, after I had turned 40. My son Kevin had picked up running with a local club called the South Shore Fireboltz. As I watched him run, I grew intrigued by road races and decided to give it a try. I was hooked from my very first race! And I’ve never looked back.
As I went, I liked it more and more and I began writing a blog about my running, titled “10K and Beyond,” in 2012. I gradually picked up both my intensity and distance, first trying a 10K, then a half marathon, and finally my first marathon in 2013. As I went, I continued to get faster and stronger and my enthusiasm for running continued to grow. My running journey became a magical one for me, marked by great accomplishm
ents, new friendships, joy, gratitude, and pride. My running journey has greatly enriched my life, inspired me, and I believe, improved me as a person.
As a writer about running, I know that there are many better runners out there and many others who are much more knowledgeable about running than I am. But, no one knows my story like I do. As a fellow runner, I hope you will enjoy my story, be able to relate it to your own running experiences and gain fresh insight and appreciation for your own running journey. Running is such a rich experience, especially when it comes to training for and running marathons. My marathon training built to a crescendo in 2015 when I trained for and ran three marathons in seven months with my neighbor and running partner Erika. As you know, when you train for a marathon together with someone, you spend A LOT of time together, and I developed a wonderful new friendship along the way. As my journey continues, I continue to enjoy connecting with other runners I meet along the way, comparing notes, learning, and sharing the camaraderie of running.
10K and Beyond collects my favorite blogs from 2012 through 2015, and weaves them together into a story with introductions added for each blog entry. Of course, my running journey continues, but the training and racing experiences of these formative years will always be among my favorites.
