The Level Legion: A Quick Look into Training
Last we left the Level Legion: Boston Edition, they were telling you a bit about why they are racing the Boston Marathon. Now, let’s take a look at how they are doing so far. We are 8 weeks away from the big day and everyone is well underway with their training. Each of our runners has a unique approach to training and our hope is that you can find some comfort and encouragement in their responses. We have here a quick check in on our runners’ general outlook on their training to date and a sample of what their weeks have been so far. Enjoy and keep up the good work, runners!
Training: So far so good! I finished up my mini-indoor season a couple weeks ago and now I am in the heart of the marathon training. I have really enjoyed the workouts so far and have done them with a variety of people which has been fun. The 10-miler this past Sunday was a good confidence booster and a good way to get in a hard workout within a long run. Under 8 weeks to the big day!
Brian is a detail oriented runner if I have ever known one. Here is a look at his past week:
Training log from Monday, 2/17 to Sunday, 2/23:

Monday (19mi total)
8:05 AM: 14mi in 1:39:00. With David Chorney. A couple Common loops then along the River and MIT sidewalks and then back to the Common and home. Most sidewalks were mostly clear but still some icy sections).
6:15 PM: 5mi in 37:00. Common at night to/from home solo.
Tuesday (14mi total):
7:30 AM: 8mi in 58:00. Ran into Nils on the River and then ran with him into work (Longwood) and then home.
5:40 PM: 6mi in 44:00. BU to the Common via Comm. Did 2 laps with Chorney (and one with Brenden Prindiville) and then ran back home with Chorney on Newbury. Mo’ sno’. Pretty slushy at times but not too terrible.
Wednesday (20mi total):
7:05 AM: 5mi in 39:00. Easy shakeout. More Common loops.
6:00 PM: 15mi total. 4 x 1600 @ LT (4:52-5:00) w/ 75s rest. Then 3min rest and 3x1000m @ 10k pace (~2:58). At Reggie Lewis at the BAA practice.
Splits: 4:52.5 [1:30r], 4:51.4 [1:45r], 4:48.4 [1:14r], 4:48.1 [3:19r]

Everything a bit too fast tonight. I think I was bit more fresh coming in to this with not having done anything since LR Saturday. Chorney led the first one (with Harper) but then I was solo for the rest of the workout as they were doing shorter intervals. Started 8s behind the group on the third interval (hence the extra rest). The 1600s felt good and controlled. 1000s felt harder. Pretty warm in Reggie last night. Good practice for Gate. 2mi+ warmup (18:30), 7mi down (53:45) on ice sidewalks
Thursday (14mi total):
7:10 AM: 6M in 46:00. 3 x Common. I was worried the sidewalks would be icy but ended up being generally okay. Warm! Felt better than expected.
5:40 PM: 8M in ~60:00. From BU to Common (4 loops) and home. Ran into BP and then Chorney at the Common. Nice night. No watch so time is estimate.
Friday (14mi total):
6:25 PM: 14mi in 1:35:00. Early meeting this morning so decided to push this to the night. Waited until after the thunderstorm around 5:30pm to start. Plan was a light 6M progression from 6:00->5:10 (10s/mile). Ran into Wayne Levy along the River and then Chorney. Convinced Wayne to join for the first mile of the progression and Chorney for the first two. Nice to have the company. Weather was very nice. Rain was gone but there were lots of large puddles to run through. Wind not too bad. Used mm4.5->7, 7->4.5, 4.5->5.5 on Boston side of the River.
Splits: 5:58, 5:46, 5:31, 5:29, 5:16, 5:13
Felt pretty comfortable throughout but some leg soreness from Wednesday night still. Love Friday PM workouts though. Cooldown with Chorney on MIT sidewalks and even got in a hill in Beacon Hill.
Saturday (7mi total):
8:30 AM: 7mi in 56:00. Started out along the River but lots of ice (despite being approximately 100°F outside). Ran into KB and headed over to the Common in search of better footing. Then ran into Paul Ryan and Ken Wedel and headed back home via Newbury/Boylston.
Sunday (22mi total)
9:55 AM: 22mi+ in 2:21:36. Goal: 8M warmup. Minimal rest into start of Jones Group Realtors 10M. Plan was 8M @ goal MP, last 2M GO. Then right into 4M cooldown. All in Adidas Adios 2.
Overview: 7.8mi in 56:44, 10mi in 51:41 (4th place), 4.4mi in 33:11, 22.2M in 2:21:36 total.
