We’re really close to the start of the Mt Washington Road Race now. By now the runners are in the midst of their warm ups and focused on taming that one hill.
On Wednesday night I found myself unexpectedly discussing some race history with the Menosky’s. If the name Julie Menosky doesn’t ring a bell, it might be because her last name was Peterson when she appeared in the results in the early 90’s.
Julie was a bit reluctant, but her husband Dave gladly brought out Julie’s awards from her runner up finishes in ’91 and ’92. Both years Julie ran under one hour and fifteen minutes. Both years Julie lost to a woman who set a new course record.
In 1991, Christine Maisto ran a 1:12:15, breaking Jacqueline Gareau’s 1:13:13.5 mark from 1989. In 1992, it was J’ne Day-Lucore who raised the bar even further with her 1:11:46. Julie ran 1:14:19 and 1:14:41, respectively, those two years.
To put things in perspective, last year’s champ (Laura Haefeli) only ran 1:18:05. Sometimes you need a little bit of luck on top of all the preparation.
Will we see another record fall this year? It appears to be a deep field so it could happen. Conditions are looking to be favorable, so we could definitely see some blazing fast non-winning times.
