Greater Derry Turkey Trot a Snowy Success

Mother Nature may have dumped a foot of snow on Derry, NH the night before Thanksgiving, leaving road conditions less than ideal, but the Greater Derry Track Club still put on a great event and the LVL was there to cover the action.

The men’s race got out to an honest start as a trio consisting of North Central’s Kevin McMahon, RPI’s Steve Hammar, and Southern New Hampshire University’s Jake Wormald worked through the mile mark in 5’10. McMahon would eventually break it open and cruise across the line for his first turkey trot victory in 16’05” after placing a close second to BAA’s Peter Najem in last year’s contest. Hammar and Wormald would soon follow McMahon in 16’14” and 16’23” respectively. Kevin’s brother Craig McMahon (BAA) won the race in 2008, so now both of the stud runners in the McMahon family are Derry Turkey Trot champions. Also not to mention Kevin was celebrating his college team’s D3 National Title from last weekend, so this just added to his fun.

On the women’s side, Whirlaway’s Amy Bernard dropped the hammer hard and won by over a minute. Former Merrimack runner Rebecca Ainscow would race strong to take the female runner-up spot in 20’08” with 15 year old Samantha Magano 3rd in 20’42”. Today’s race marked Amy’s second turkey trot victory in a row. Will she be back next year to perform the hat trick?

Check out the race results.

Needless to say, we’ve got some video coverage:
