Boston Prep 16 Miler: Race Preview

For those of you in the New England area targeting Boston, VCM, or any spring marathon as a big race of 2015, this Sunday’s Boston Prep 16 Miler will be one to look forward to. The hills presented in this Derry, NH classic will surely make the Newton Hills look easy, specifically the covetted Warner Hill Rd. at mile 11 of the prep. The Greater Derry Track Club hosted event has attracted top-notch athletes throughout the years as Casey Moulton and Steph Reilly hold the course records in 1:25:07 and 1:36:54 over the “moderately challenging” layout. Here’s a few folks to watch out for up front on Sunday morning:

Tim Cattoggio (CMS) - Tim is a top of the region performer in the longer distances and placed 4th in the prep in 2011 with a 1:35:04. He just might be seeking to climb the last few steps up the ladder and contend for the big W this year.

Eric Williams (Whirlaway) - One of the top master’s runners on the circuit last year, Eric looks to finish right up with the top guys. He recently turned 50 and placed 2nd in the senior’s division at Club XC Nationals. He will be looked upon as the top men’s senior in New England and will kick off his racing circuit with the prep.

Lauren Tilton (Greater Derry TC) - The women’s field looks pretty wide open as far as far as pre-registrants go, but this newly aquired GDTC member looks to rep the host club with a strong 16 mile performance. Lauren placed as the 4th female at the Convenient MD 10k last fall. Will she be able to convert her more traditional road racing talent into a fast run 10 miles longer in distance?

And this is only a few from the pre-registrants so far. You never know who else might decide to commit the day of the race. Last year, the race was won by Sam Fazioli from Salem, NH and Lindsay Willard from Somerville, MA. Who will take home the maple syrup this year?
