Marathon Weekend Schedule Highlights

We scanned the flurry of BAA press releases today to present to you some key dates, times & details to know. Some of them are probably obvious to you, maybe some of you a couple of points here are ‘breaking news, either way you should keep this handy.

Thursday

GRAND OPENING OF BOSTON MARATHON RUNBASE at 9:30 a.m.

Earlier this month, adidas, the Boston Athletic Association, and Marathon Sports, Inc., announced the launch of the Boston Marathon RunBase. The adidas exclusive community experience will open just steps from the finish line and will be the first of its kind in the U.S.

Boston Marathon RunBase will be the center of running in Boston, located at the 26-mile mark of the legendary course. Boston Marathon® RunBase celebrates the world’s oldest annual marathon 52 weeks a year with inspirational displays curated by the B.A.A. and drawn from the organization’s archives. Boston Marathon® RunBase will be complete with a changing room with lockers, as runners will use the facility as a base for informal runs.

Community runs, expert speakers, visits from elite athletes, training plan assistance and nutrition education will all be offered from Boston Marathon RunBase. The 2,000 square foot space will exclusively sell premium adidas footwear, seasonal and official marathon apparel, and accessories. A calendar of events, workshops, seminars and clinics separates a runner’s experience at Boston Marathon® RunBase from any other in the sport.

JOHN HANCOCK SCHOLARS & STARS IN HOPKINTON at 9:30 a.m.

On the Thursday before each Boston Marathon, it is an annual tradition that elite athletes from Kenya visit elementary students in Hopkinton as part of the John Hancock Scholars & Stars event in Hopkinton. John Hancock brings Kenyan runners together with students for a pre-race pep rally in the town where the Boston Marathon begins.

The John Hancock Scholars & Stars event is a fun and exciting learning experience for both students and runners. Hopkinton students study the culture of their running friends throughout the year, and this event gives students the chance to experience a bit of Kenyan culture first hand.

Kenyan athletes visiting Hopkinton are part of the John Hancock Elite Athlete Team.

Friday

BOSTON MARATHON FINISH LINE UNVEILING & PRESENTATION OF TOP BIB NUMBERS at 8:45 a.m.

Photo opportunity: The iconic Boston Marathon Finish Line will be unveiled by local dignitaries, and the top returning athletes will bepresented their bib numbers.

JOHN HANCOCK SPORTS & FITNESS EXPO AND ATHLETE NUMBER PICK-UP from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The 38th annual John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo features more than 200 exhibitors and is widely regarded as the running industry’s premier showcase for now products, services, and events. Complimentary admission courtesy of John Hancock, Conventures, Inc., and the B.A.A. Also at the Hynes Convention Center, registered athletes pick up their official race numbers.

Saturday

2015 B.A.A. 5K at 8:00 a.m.

An estimated 10,000 participants will take part in the seventh annual B.A.A. 5K, kicking off Boston Marathon weekend in grand style. Starting and finishing at Boston Common, the race is a scenic tour of Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood.  Participants pass the newly opened Boston Marathon RunBase, as well as over the Boston Marathon finish line, on Boylston Street before reaching the finish on Charles Street.

Defending women’s champion Molly Huddle – a 2012 Olympian – and two-time men’s winner Ben True both return to Boston seeking another B.A.A. 5K title. The pair will square off against a world class field that includes B.A.A. 10K and B.A.A. Half Marathon champion Mamitu Daska, as well as B.A.A. Distance Medley victor Stephen Sambu, among others.

The B.A.A. 5K is the first race of the 2015 B.A.A. Distance Medley, a three-race series that also includes the B.A.A. 10K (June 21) and the B.A.A. Half Marathon, presented by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund (October 11).

2015 B.A.A. INVITATIONAL MILE at 10:30 a.m.

The B.A.A. Invitational Mile races feature professional, high school, and middle school runners competing on a loop course that starts and finishes on Boylston Street.

Kicking the event off at 10:30 a.m. are the Girls’ and Boys’ Middle School 1,000 meter races. Each of the eight cities and towns along the Boston Marathon course are represented in the race, fielding two entrants for each gender.

Following the middle school races are the Girls’ and Boys’ Scholastic Miles. Like the Middle School races, each of the eight cities and towns along the Boston Marathon course are represented in the race, fielding two entrants for each gender. These athletes are between the ninth and 12th grades in school.

Capping off the B.A.A. Invitational Mile event are the professional miles, featuring Olympians and global championships medalists. Three-time champion Morgan Uceny, who lives and trains in Boston, returns seeking her fourth victory. Great Britain’s Chris O’Hare leads the men’s field, having claimed a bronze medal at both the European Indoor and Outdoor Championships.

Not included in the BAA press releases but something you should definitely check out on Sunday…

Tyler Andrews wil attempt to break his own world record in the half marathon on the treadmill. The Hoka One One runner will also be raising money for the STRIVE program.
