Joseph Barrett ran an 18:40 and was the first man to finish at the Mystery 5k, the latest entry in the Good Times 5k series. Joseph won a somewhat close one over Paul Fortunato, who came in a 18:51. But Joseph was only the first man. It might be a knee jerk reaction or force of habit to just assume that the first one across is a man, as is the case in most races around here. But the overall winner, the Champion of the race, was not a man. No, it was a woman who quite regularly serves up a butt whooping to a lot of men in races, only this time she pulled off the impressive feat of beating all of them.
Kara Haas, at 44 years young, dominated the field and won in 18:14.17, good for a 5:53 pace. It doesn’t happen very often, but when it does it’s definitely something worth celebrating. Kara is an impressive specimen of a runner and is one that makes both men and women a little nervous when they see her on the line. Kudos to Kara for pulling out the overall win!
Shout out to Lou Peters, who at 90 years old ran a 51:42, and he didn’t come in last. At 90 years old he’s still beating people Very impressive.
Thanks to Mike Quintal for the photos.
