Watertown, MA – September 29, 2015 – Tufts Health Plan is pleased to announce the creation of a Blind and Visually Impaired division for the running of the 39th Annual Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women on Monday, October 12, 2015. The new division is made possible through a partnership with the Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (MABVI).
“With so few races in New England incorporating blind or visually impaired divisions, we think it’s important to give these dedicated athletes who are blind or visually impaired the opportunity to compete alongside everyone else and inspire others around the world,” said Barbara Salisbury, CEO of MABVI. “Our mission is to show the world that ‘disability’ does not mean ‘inability’ and that with the right support, people who are visually impaired can accomplish anything they set their minds to. We are so happy to be working with Tufts Health Plan, an organization that shares our beliefs in empowerment and healthy living.”
“The addition of this division affirms our continued commitment to promoting wellness for women and men of all abilities,” said James Roosevelt Jr., chief executive officer, Tufts Health Plan. “We are pleased to welcome a new division of dedicated athletes and appreciate all of the good work from our friends at MABVI.”
This year, MABVI’s Team with a Vision will be working with Tufts Health Plan to partner its employees as guides for runners who are blind or visually impaired. Runners in the blind and visually impaired division will join participants of all ages and abilities including elite athletes, wheelchair and hand cycle racers, recreational runners and walkers. Registration for all divisions is now open and offers guides, who will not be chipped for time, free registration when signing up with a runner who is blind or visually impaired.
Established in 1977 as the Bonnie Belle Mini Marathon, Tufts Health Plan became the lead sponsor of the race in 1985. The Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women now hosts more than 7,000 participants of all ages and abilities who challenge themselves to achieve their fitness goals while celebrating an incredible community of women athletes.
The Tufts Health Plan 10K course is one-of-a-kind and highlights the very best of Boston in the fall. Starting and ending at the Boston Common, the race winds through historic Back Bay before heading into Cambridge for a loop along the Charles River. The course is a thrill to all athletes, whether they’re running their first Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women or their 30th.
Each year, mothers, daughters, aunts, sisters, and friends run to the cheers of thousands of supporters. And for 2015, the USA Track & Field has selected the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women as the USA Women’s 10K Championship race.
