Unlike the past couple years, it was a near-perfect fall morning for racing at the 42nd Annual Greater Derry Track Club Turkey Trot. One of the largest Thanksgiving Day races in NH, the trot attacted 1148 finishers who were willing to offset the calories of their Thanksgiving Day turkey, stuffing, and alcoholic beverages of choice for those of age. The race up front got out much quicker than the past few years as University of New Hampshire 5th year Senior Sam Gagnon led through the mile in 4’50 with Kevin McMahon (North Central alum), Jason DeDonato (Team RUN) and Andrew Sears (Runner’s Alley) giving chase in around 4’57. Gagnon would lead the rest of the way and eventually break the tape with a time of 15 minutes 39 seconds with 2014 champ McMahon 2nd in 15’57 and Gagnon’s UNH teammate Mitch Dutton 3rd in 16’03.
On the women’s side, Whirlygirl Amy Bernard was out to grab her 3rd straight GDTC Turkey Trot title and she easily defended it as she breezed through the line in 18 minutes 29 seconds, her 2nd quickest time on the course. Greater Derry Track Club co-teammate Lauren Tilton would be the 2nd female to finish in 19’27 with astounding 12 year old (and potential future Pinkerton athlete) Morgan Nault also in 19’27 (net time). The top master’s runners on the day were Mark Hecox (17’46) and Cindy Army (20’32). Though both top master’s athletes were in their 50s (and thus also the top senior’s athletes), top runners in their 40s were GDTC triathlete Jimmie Cochran (17’50) and GDTC Hot Flash Julie Mullaney (20’38). These individuals all certainly earned their extra few pieces of the pie!
